The snow is quite a bit deeper as you get closer to Minturn. The clouds and towering hills to the west were also starting to block the bright sunshine. |
| Before the work train got to Minturn,
the hi-railer and brakeman had driven to Minturn and set the switch for
the yard instead of the main line.
Matt was still following the train along with his son, Dylan, who was hidden in the brush in the previous image at Gypsum. |

The work train pulled forward to couple
on to the loaded gondolas, but before they could move back to the west
with both the loads and empties, all the brakes had to be released on the
loaded cars.
Once everything was ready to move, and the FRED was on the rear end, they pushed & pulled the train to the west part of the yard and uncoupled from the empty cars. The now westbound engines and the 14 loads switched over to the mainline using a set of switches which enabled helpers to be added in the middle of coal trains when the Tennessee Pass was in use. |
| The crew backed the train east and parked the train just across the middle crossing in Minturn while they visited the Turntable Restaurant for a snack. I think they were thrilled to be back in Minturn... |
